The advancement of civil technology provided a new generation of children with great opportunities when growing up: they became natives in the realm of technology. Nevertheless, I feel obliged to express my concerns that children nowadays get fewer and fewer opportunities of playing with simple toys or outside the house, activities which are beneficial for their development in multiple aspects. This, I believe, is a serious social problem that urgently needs reflection by our generation.
A very persuasive argument against the excess use of technology for children is that it limits their physical development. I remember when I was young, I always go out to the yard to run, climb a tree or ride a bike. It is a pity that technology nowadays encourages children to stay indoors and explore a world of binary digits instead of a world filled with fresh air and plants. My concern is that insufficient amount of exercise in one's childhood and adolescence may prove to leave permanent physical defects when one grows to become an adult.
Another point I wish to make is that technology limits children's social life.By constantly attracting children to pay attention to electronic devices and softwares, technology has become children's best friend, leading kids to be socially unapt as they do not have the early experience of socializing with playmates as children, which may well be the best memory of one's childhood years. Technology may eventually prove to be, instead of a friend, a foe.
My final point is that traditional toys are better at helping the development of children's cognitive abilities. Traditional toys and games such as jigsaw puzzles, board games, and roleplaying games have well been proven to help children develop mentally and mature intellectually, while most contemporary computer games are not even created to help children develop, but with the sole purpose of entertainment. This is a great disadvantage of technology in comparison with traditional games.
Thus, I believe it is extremely worrisome that children are now giving up toys and playing outside, and regarding technology as their best friend,when the former assist children in developing physically, socially, as well as mentally.
